OSAKA, Japan American sprinter Maurice Greene is confident of breaking his own 100 meters world record of 9.79 seconds at the Japan Grand Prix on today.

"The possibility of me breaking the world record tomorrow is very possible," Greene told a news conference on Friday.

"It's possible anytime I step on the track. It's just a matter of me putting together for proper race to break the world record."

Greene is scheduled to race against compatriot Bernard Williams, Obadele Thompson of Barbados, Abdul-Aziz Zakari of Ghana, Deji Aliu of Nigeria, and four Japanese athletes today.

Greene, who clocked 9.91 seconds at last year's Grand Prix in Osaka, said he was fully fit, even though the season had only just begun, Reuters reported.

"When I go to a track meet, I am there to perform no matter what time of the year it is, no matter what the conditions are like," he said.

"I prepare myself hoping that I can perform to the best of my ability because no one wants to see you just come out for a practice meet.

"My job is to come out here and put on the best performance as possible. I believe that's why people love to see me run."
