Iran Lifts Takhti Intl. Greco-Roman, Freestyle Wrestling Trophies
Collecting 64 points, Iranian Greco-Roman camp, stood first and Armenia and Republic of Azerbaijan finished runner-up and third, winning 54 and 49 points respectively.
Iran took four gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
Also bagging five gold, five silver and six bronze medals, Iranian freestyle wrestlers ranked first with 68 points followed by Turkey and Georgia with each winning 59 and 46 points respectively.
Home freestyle wrestlers had to fight in four all-Iranian finals of 55-, 60-, 66- and 84kg. In 74- and 69kg finals, Iranian competitors clashed against their Turkish and Russian rivals.
Iranians, Mohammad Aslani in 55kg, Masoud Mostafa Jokar in 60kg, Alireza Dabir in 66kg, Majid Khodaei in 84kg and Alireza Heidari in 96kg snatched five golds.
The silver winners were Alireza Darvishi, Mohammad Talaei, Mosen Babaei, Mehdi Hajizadeh, Mostafa Younessi while Morad Mohammadi, Mohammad-Ali Konjabi, Hassan Tahmassebi, Mostafa Alizadeh, Hamid Seifi and Fardin Ma'soumi won bronze medals for the Iranian team.
In 55kg Greco-Roman category, Hamidreza Bavafa of Iran defeated his Armenian opponent 4-2 in the final and bagged gold.
The Asian champion in 2000 and 2001, Ali Ashkani, added another glittering gold to the Iranian asset after crushing his Azeri rival 8-0 in the 60kg final.
Mehdi Nassiri of Iran, the Asian champion in Ulan Bator in 2001, finished runner-up and bagged the silver of 66kg class and Mehdi Hodaei and Mehdi Tavakkoli clashed in an all-Iranian fight during which Hodaei took the bronze medal with a 3-2 win.
The 84kg wrestler of Iran, Alireza Nikkhoo, beat his countryman Mojtaba Eslami 4-3 and bagged bronze.
In 96kg, Masoud Hashemzadeh and Bahaeddin Moradi, both from Iran, snatched the gold and bronze medals respectively after overcoming their Armenian and Iranian opponents.
Hashemzadeh, who won world youth gold in Uzbekistan event in 2001 managed to defeat the Armenian wrestler Robert Petrosian 3-1 in the final.
Moradi beat Abbas Khaki, also an Iranian, 4-1.
Iran took one gold and one silver in 120kg after Alireza Gharibi and Mehdi Sharbiani stood top and second respectively.
In the final, the Asian champion in 2001 and former world youth champion Gharibi won 3-1 that clash against his countryman Sharbiani, also a former world youth champion.
Azer Aliyev of Azerbaijan beat Sajjad Borzoo of Iran 8-5 and took the bronze medal.
During the two-day tournament, 112 Greco-Roman wrestlers from 11 countries of Iran, Armenia, Republic of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Syria, Turkmenistan, India, Russia, Tajikistan, Denmark and Kyrgyzstan competed.
