TEHRAN -- Iranian Parliament Speaker Mahdi Karrubi here Wednesday said that he is optimistic that Hashem Aghajari's case will get resolved soon.

The speaker called on students to demonstrate their opposition to a death sentence issued on Aghajari, a prominent university professor, within the framework of the Constitution, Central News Bureau reported.

Talking to reporters, Karrubi invited the students to observe order, calm and discipline in their protests in order not to provide the enemies with opportunities to take advantage of unrest in the country.

Many students have staged demonstrations and sit-ins in protest to the death sentence, handed down by an Iranian lower court on Hashem Aghajari.

Questioning is the basis of media activities, Karrubi said, suggesting that officials should tolerate impacts of questioning in order to materialize the concept of press freedom.

He further called the recent steps by the U.S. government to bar an Iranian TV documentary filmmaker and journalist Hossein Dehbashi from entering the U.S. an 'inhumane and non-democratic measure'.
