Indian Woman Who Gives Birth at 65 Could Be World's Oldest Mother
The woman, Satyabhama Mahapatra, has no birth certificate, but she will be examined by forensic experts, her doctor said Friday.
Suresh Kumar Aggarwal, the doctor who first advised Satyabhama against the procedure two years ago and performed the caesarean section at a private hospital in the central Indian state of Chattisgarh, said he will be writing to the Guinness book of records.
"We have called forensic experts tomorrow. The results will be ready in two days. After that I will write to the Guinness book people," Aggarwal told Deutsche Presse-Agentur DPA. The oldest known mother in the world is an Italian aged 63.
The doctor said he had also taken an affidavit from Satyabhama and her husband Krishnachandra, a 68-year-old retired school teacher, stating she was 65.
Aggarwal said Satyabhama and Krishnachandra were married when she was just seven.
"They met me in 2001, but I discouraged them because she was too old to have a baby. I didn't think they would be successful," the doctor said.
This is the couple's first child. "They told me they felt like social outcasts because they had no children. This is the way Hindus think. They were desperate for offspring because they said they wouldn't get water in heaven if they didn't have children," Aggarwal told DPA.
Their son was born healthy, weighing 3 kilograms. Doctors said Satyabhama was also doing well.
