Washington is undermining Lebanese unity: official

TEHRAN -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said here on Tuesday, whereas the different Lebanese political factions are preparing for a new round of national talks, the United States is undermining the unity and political sovereignty of the country with its provocations intended to weaken Lebanon.

The U.S. “guardian like” claims in Lebanon are in contrast with international conventions, he stated.

“The U.S. approach and attempts to prepare the political ground for extending the 33-day war of Israel in Lebanon, has questioned Washington’s political role in the region, and revealed its hostile and interfering intentions as well as its stance that favors the Zionist regime’s fomenting acts,” Hosseini added.

The U.S. groundless claim that Iran has violated the arms embargo on Lebanon is intended to create a psychological atmosphere in the region against the Islamic republic, and to turn the global attention away from Israel’s successive violation of resolution 1701 contents, he noted.

“It is better for Washington to clear off the negative consequences of its 33-day support of the Zionist invasion from the people’s minds by stopping its interference in the matters of other countries, and not to intensify the world’s hatred toward itself,” the spokesman opined.

At this time the global public opinion has reach a consensus that the only way to bring calm and stability to Lebanon and the region is to cut the U.S. all-out support from Israel, and to end the six decades of genocide crime, injustice, insecurity, and instability in the Middle East, he said.
