BUENOS AIRES (Xinhua) -- Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte admitted Monday he has failed in his efforts to amend the Constitution to make his reelection possible, according to news reaching here.
This is the first time Duarte, who took office on Aug. 15, 2003, accepted the fact that he cannot be reelected in next year's election after his frustrated efforts to change the Constitution.
"There are no options to seek the constitutional amendment for reelection, it is impossible now and we are going to accept it," Duarte said in statements.
Opposition parties -- Authentic Liberal Radical, Beloved Country, Solidary Country, National Encounter and UNACE, remain firmly united in the legislature to block Duarte's bid to seek reelection.
Political sources said Duarte would try to convince voters from the ruling Colorado Party to support the candidacy of current Education and Culture Minister Blanca Ovelar.
