TEHRAN -- A seminar on Persian and Spanish modern poetry will open today at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) to commemorate the illustrious poets Nima Yushij and Juan Ramón Jiménez Mantecón.

A number of international literati, scholars, writers and students have been invited to discuss the history and development of modern poetry at the event, which will come to an end tomorrow.

Several experts, including Alfred Kavanagh from Spain and Ali-Asghar Mohammadkhani from Iran, are scheduled to deliver lectures at the seminar.

Known as the father of Iranian blank verse poetry, Nima Yushij was the first to propose a radical renewal of Persian poetry, not only of its contents but also of its prosody and imagery.

Nobel laureate Spanish poet Jiménez Mantecón was a prolific poet and writer who received the prize in 1956 for his lyrical poetry, which in the Spanish language constitutes an example of high spirit and artistic purity.

The event has been organized by the Faculty of Philology at the UCM, the Spanish Society of Iranology (Sociedad Espanola de Iranologia), and Tehran’s Book City Institute.
