Tehran writes to intl. organizations on Bahrain crackdown

TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has sent messages to heads of a number of international organizations expressing Iran’s deep concern over the harsh crackdown on the Bahraini people and warning against the consequences of foreign military intervention in the sheikhdom.

The Iranian foreign minister sent his messages to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Security Council chief Kodjo Menan, Organization of Islamic Cooperation Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, Arab League Secretary General Nabil el-Arabi, Chairperson of African Union Erastus Mwencha, and the current secretary general of the Non-Aligned Movement, Mohamed Hussein Tantawi.

In his messages, Salehi said that insistence on dispatching foreign forces to Bahrain to suppress the people who are expressing their grievances in a peaceful manner threatens regional peace and security.

Salehi said that the “organized crackdown” on the Bahraini people over the last year, in which dozens of people in this “small country” have been either killed or injured, is a clear instance of human rights violations.

The double-standard approach of certain countries which have major roles in international decision-making in regard to the issue of human rights has emboldened systematic violators of human rights in Bahrain, he stated.
