Machado accuses Venezuelan government of abducting close ally after detention
Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said that her close ally, Juan Pablo Guanipa, was “kidnapped” by armed, plainclothes men in Caracas just hours after his release from an eight-month political detention.
According to AP’s Monday report, this occurred as the government of acting President Delcy Rodríguez released at least 30 other political figures, including attorney Perkins Rocha and María Oropeza, following a visit from the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
While freed prisoners and their families celebrated with chants of defiance, the “disappearance” of Guanipa—previously accused of “terrorism” in what his family calls a crackdown on dissent—has sparked serious concern from rights group Foro Penal.
Despite the government debating an amnesty bill that could potentially free hundreds more by next week, families and the U.S.-backed opposition remain cautious, criticizing the slow and volatile nature of these releases.
