Bayern Coach Goes Home Happy With Point
Bayern's determined comeback took their tally to four points from two matches, following a 1-0 victory over Olympique Lyon, and left the competition's 1999 runners-up riding high at the top of Group C.
"Of course, I'm very happy with this one point," said Hitzfeld, who felt his team had shown both their good and bad sides at Highbury.
"We showed both of our faces. In the first half, we were very weak, we just couldn't find our game... Defensively, we were too far away from the man, we left them too much room. In the second half, we got much better."
Hitzfeld was pleased not only with his team's fighting performance, but also their sense of timing with Michael Tarnat pulling one back for the German champions barely a minute after Nwankwo Kanu had put Arsenal 2-0 ahead.
"We showed that we could take a grip of this game and we found the right psychological point to score the goal to make it 2-1," he said. "And the equalizer was a wonderful free-kick by Mehmet Scholl.
"So we can now go home happy."
The Bayern chief said he had expected Arsenal's early barrage but said the intensity had more to do with Bayern's initial weaknesses than the home side's strengths.
"I was expecting this," Hitzfeld said. "I knew that in the first 15 minutes they really put pressure on you. However, what was decisive was that we were playing badly and not that Arsenal were that great."
