PALMA DE MALLORCA, Spain Top seed Andrei Pavel crashed out of the first round of the Mallorca Open on Tuesday after a 6-4 6-7 7-5 defeat by Spain's Felix Mantilla.

Pavel, from Romania, responded to losing the first set by forcing a tiebreak in the second, clinching it 7-2, Reuters reported.

Mantilla, who lost to Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final at Estoril earlier this season and went out to the same player in the Barcelona quarterfinals, showed he was back to his best after injury by wrapping up the match in the final set.
