PESHAWAR, Pakistan -- Twelve people, including nine Europeans, suffered minor injuries in a grenade attack in Pakistan's northwestern frontier province on Saturday, police and doctors said.

The victims had stopped near an archeological site in the district of Mansehra, 150 kilometers (93 miles) east of here, when an unidentified man lobbed a grenade at them, a police official told AFP.

The wounded were rushed to a local hospital where doctors said all the victims suffered superficial injuries and were discharged after treatment.

"Every one of them is out of danger," a doctor at the Mansehra district hospital told AFP.

The victims were seven Germans, including five women, one Austrian man and a Slovak national. A Pakistani man and two Pakistani children were also injured in the attack.

"It was apparently a handmade explosive device which was lobbed at the group," an Interior Ministry spokesman told AFP. "We have sent a team of bomb disposal experts to examine the nature of the explosives device used.

"All the injured have been released from hospital and they are heading back to Islamabad under a police escort. They suffered minor injuries on the legs and hands."

He said the attack took place in an area close to an Afghan refugee camp.

There was no immediate report of any arrests.

A spokesman for the German Embassy said they had been informed of the incident. "We have heard that they suffered minor injuries," an embassy spokesman said.
