TEHRAN -- The behavior of Russia and China at the UN Security Council can be a logical basis for Iran’s relations with these two countries in the future, Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Committee Chairman Alaeddin Borujerdi said on Tuesday.

“Although there is no guarantee that Russia and China will oppose the extremist demands of the United States and the UN Security Council, but their behavior at the Council over Iran’s nuclear program can be a logical basis for our relations with these two countries,” Borujerdi told reporters.

On the possibility of vetoing a Security Council resolution against Iran by China or Russia, he noted that these two countries oppose any worsening of the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program and a likely veto of any resolution depends on their relations with Iran.

When asked what could be Iran’s best approach at this juncture, Borujerdi said that Iran should have close relations with the permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council and defend its rights within the frameworks of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“The Islamic Republic’s doors are open for negotiation. We view talks as the only logical way out of the impasse,” he commented.
