Freestyle wrestler Mohammadi ends Iran four-year world gold drought

GUANGZHOU, China – Morad Mohammadi here Wednesday ended Iran’s four-year wait for winning a gold medal at the world freestyle bouts.

On his way to the 60kg final, the 2005 world bronze medalist Mohammadi snatched four back-to-back wins.

He edged past Macedonia’s Murat Ramazanov in the opening fight, celebrating 4-1 and 4-0 romps in his clashes against Vasil Fedorichin from Ukraine and Georgian wrestler David Pogosian respectively.

Mohammadi gave Japan’s Noriyuki Takatsuka a 5-0 drubbing in the semifinal to throw down the gauntlet for the U.S. finalist Mike Zadick.

The Iranian was transported with joy after he beat Zadick 2-1, taking the coveted gold.

Russian wrestler Mavlet Batirov and Takatsuka tied at No. 3, bagging bronze.
