Key players in Israeli war inquiry
• Prime Minister Ehud Olmert: Ordered the launching of the war and publicly stated goals which were not achieved: returning the two captured soldiers and crushing Hezbollah. The committee has no power to dismiss him.
• Defense Minister Amir Peretz: A former union official with no previous experience in government or military affairs, he had only been in the post for 10 weeks when the war began.
• Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz: Resigned from the post of military chief of staff in January after internal army inquiries found widespread problems in the military's performance. Halutz, a former air force chief, was said by military commentators to lack a feel for the complexities of a ground campaign.
• Vice Premier Shimon Peres: Told the commission that Israel's decision to invade was a mistake and the military was unprepared.
