Temblors jolt southern Iran

TEHRAN (IRNA) -- Three earthquakes measuring 4.6, 3.5 and 3.7 on the Richter scale rattled the city of Khonj in the southern province of Fars early Saturday.

According to the seismological base of the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the 4.6-Richter scale quake was registered at 02:33 hours local time (2303 GMT on Friday).

The epicenter of the first tremor was located in an area measuring 53.27 degrees in longitude and 27.92 degrees in latitude, the report added.

The second quake took place at 02:55 hours local time (2325 GMT on Friday), with its epicenter felt in an area measuring 53.22 degrees in longitude and 27.93 degrees in latitude.

The 3.7-Richter scale earthquake, which occurred at 03:17 hours local time (2347 GMT on Friday), had its epicenter registered in an area measuring 53.3 degrees in longitude and 27.8 degrees in latitude.

Head of Health and Treatment Department of the city of Khonj Bahador Moqaddas told IRNA that four people were wounded as a result of the quakes.

He said the quakes terrified local residents, causing a man to suffer stroke.
