If sky is the limit, dare to fly

There is nothing, which can withstand the power of human will, no matter which race you belong, what kind of culture and civilization you have been brought up in, and whether you are man or woman, weak or strong… to succeed what is required is powerful human will. Our universe is made such that it is waiting to be conquered. It needs its conquerors. Anyone who decides to get something and puts his or her full energies in it, gets it one day, sooner or later, provided that he or she is blessed with the passion and burning desire for it.  The desire should stay burning unless and until one climb the height one has chosen. Anousheh Ansari started to nourish her dreams of swimming in space in a spacecraft some three decades back when she was just a small girl living in Mashhad: “I was so young but so fascinated with space; it’s always been in my heart…I’d lie there looking and wondering.” She wanted to discover the universe, its enchanting beauties, its mythical horrors. She wanted to travel deep into space and look back in wonder and awe at the blackness of the universe, and through it our beautiful blue planet, floating in the universe. Last year on September 18 the wonder of that little girl became a reality. Her burning desire had been translated into a space expedition reality. She went 220 miles away from Earth at International Space Station (ISS). She set new records … becoming the first female space tourist, the first Muslim woman and the first Iranian to go in orbit.   She thinks that in space there is an infinite amount of energy resources that, if given the right kind of technology and the right environment, humanity can benefit from. She wanted to discover those energy recourses and enrich the knowledge of space science. So far, the huge amounts spent on activities relating to manned flights to outer space have given the insufficient returns to human kind. Conscious of this fact, she asked for a few privileges that were denied. She asked for installing a telescope on the ISS in order to find out some of the activities that different space agencies were initiating to see if she could partner with them to bring a private or commercial aspect to it. She wanted to use it for educational purposes for amateur astronomers and other people interested in astronomy. Probably the reason why she was not encouraged was that there’s a serious issue of space being used for military purposes. It is said that NASA’s programs are not as innocent as they are made out to be.  It is feared that the use of nuclear materials in spacecrafts and rockets is part of the much larger... process of militarization of space. Ms. Ansari’s expedition into space is the story of extraordinary human courage, dedication, determination and exceptional self-belief in her abilities. At 16, she migrated to the United States with her family and studied electronics and computer engineering in George Mason University, and later got a master degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University. Recently, she also acquired another master degree in Astronomy from Swinburne University of Technology in Australia. In 1993, with a meager amount of $50,000, Anousheh Ansari, with the help of her husband, Hamid Ansari, set up a telecommunications company … a maker of software for switching signals on phone networks, in Texas, the United States. She was recognized by Working Woman magazine as the winner of the 2000 National Entrepreneurial Excellence award, and was chosen as the winner of the 1999 Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year. After seven years the couple decided to sell the company for astronomical figures of $552.6 million. On September 18, 2006, a week after her 40th birthday, from the steppes of Kazakhstan, she was blasted off into space for 10-day expedition … and landed back safely on earth on 29 September. In all the tributes and descriptions about her that have appeared in Iran and in the world, Ms. Ansari’s determination to achieve her dreams stands out as her principal quality. The training required to become an astronaut is the most demanding. The mental and physical stamina needed is so rigorous that only the fittest can make it. Especially to learn to perform everyday tasks in weightless conditions, including going to the lavatory and throwing up in a bag is a very difficult task to achieve. She did all that. Ms. Ansari is a role model for women across the globe. Her smiling face will make mothers and fathers rethink about their daughters. It will make the world realize that every individual deserves the right to dream. Her grand adventure has struck a chord with so many young girls to go for the uncommon and the extraordinary. The pride of Muslim women, Anousheh Ansari must have thought before her historic leap: If sky is the limit, then dare to fly
