TOKYO (IRNA) -- Iran and Japan are two victims of weapons of mass destruction in the world, Iran's ambassador to Japan said on Friday.

In a press conference marking the 20th anniversary of chemical attack on the city of Sardasht in western Iran by the Saddam regime, Abas Araqchi said Iran is the victim of chemical weapons and Japan is the victim of nuclear bombs.
He said the Saddam regime, which was backed by certain Western governments, dropped chemical bombs on Iranian border villages, the envoy added.
Local residents and some Iranian soldiers are still suffering from those chemical wounds, he regretted.
Araqchi made it clear that Iran never thinks of possessing weapons of mass destruction because such weapons have brought nothing except death and destruction.
Outlining the latest developments in Iran's peaceful nuclear program, he voiced Tehran's readiness to resume talks on the dispute.
As to Iran's package of proposals, the ambassador said Tehran is ready to form a consortium with other states to help remove any probable concerns regarding its nuclear activities.
In its package the Islamic Republic has also announced its readiness to hold constructive negotiations on Lebanon, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
On Tehran-Tokyo relations, he said the two countries enjoy amicable ties.
Araqchi expressed hope that all-out cooperation between the two countries would expand further.
