Iranian cinema big winner at Dhaka filmfest

TEHRAN -- Iranian cinema was the big winner at the 14th Dhaka International Film Festival as three Iranian movies won top awards in various categories during the closing ceremony of the Bangladeshi event on Friday evening.

In addition, Iran’s Fatemeh Motamed-Arya was crowned best actress for her role in Azerbaijani filmmaker Elchin Musaoglu’s acclaimed movie “Nabat”, the organizers announced.

In the spiritual film section, “Today”, directed by Reza Mirkarimi, was picked as best film while the award for best film in the women filmmakers section was presented to “Track 143” directed by Narges Abyar.

The award for best screenwriter was also presented to Iranian writers Niloufar Mahluji and Azita Irai for their collaboration on “Three Fish” by director Hamidreza Qorbani.

The award for best film in the official competition went to “A Few Cubic Meters of Love”. The drama about migration and love was directed in Iran in 2014 by Tehran-based Afghan filmmaker Jamshid Mahmudi. His brother, Navid Mahmudi, is the producer of the movie.

Thai director Tom Waller won the best director award for “The Last Executioner”.

The best actor award was shared between Thai actor Vithaya Pansringarm for his role in “The Last Executioner” and Iraqi actor Mahmoud Abo Al Abbas for his role in “The Silence of the Shepherd”.
