Nine US senators have called on the administration of President Joe Biden to consistently apply the Leahy Law to Israel.

“My predecessor Patrick Leahy wrote the law that bans U.S. aid to foreign military units that violate human rights, yet multiple administrations have failed to equally implement the law,” Senator Peter Welch said on X. “My colleagues and I are calling for the consistent application of the Leahy Law to the [Israeli forces].” In the letter dated April 30, addressed to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, the senators said: “The Leahy Law holds all countries to the same standard, yet it appears that the IDF, by far the largest recipient of US military assistance may be held to a different standard.” The term “Leahy law” refers to two statutory provisions prohibiting the US government from using funds for assistance to units of foreign security forces where there is credible information implicating that unit in the commission of gross violations of human rights, according to the State Department.
