This province, covering an area 22,033 square kilometers, is located on the southeast coast of the Caspian Sea. It has borders with Turkmenistan in the north, Semnan Province in the south, Mazandaran Province in the west and Khorasan Province in the east.
The province is divided into three distinct areas: the mountainous area, the highland area and the plains area. It has a Mediterranean climate, and humidity is low compared to other provinces like Gilan and Mazandaran.
This province, with a mountainous temperate climate, has numerous natural attractions. These include forests, mountain ranges, plains, fields, deserts, rivers, and the famous gulf island and several beautiful streams which make it unique among the other provinces. It can be considered a small continent. It is located 380km from Tehran and 550km from Mashhad.
The monuments which have been discovered in Golestan in recent decades, particularly from Gorgan's Tourang Tappeh, indicate that this region was inhabited in the 3rd and 4th milleniums B.C., i.e. before the entrance of Aryans into the region.
Considering the natural sites, undoubtedly Golestan Province is one of the most beautiful and varied provinces of the country. Besides forest and steppe regions, it includes Golestan National Park, Naharkhoran Natural Park, and beautiful seashores in Bandar Gaz, Bandar Torkeman, Ashouradeh Island, wonderful Shirabad Cave, Loveh waterfall, Kaboudball cascade, international wetlands and unique and virgin forests.
