MASHHAD -- Police in the northeastern Iranian Province of Khorasan have seized over 850 kilograms of narcotic drugs from traffickers over the past week, the provincial police told reporters on Saturday.

The drugs, including 580 kilos of morphine and 300 kilos of opium, were concealed in nine trucks.

The provincial police also arrested 32 drug traffickers in connection with the drug seizure.

Iran, which lies on the drug crossroads, has launched a fierce campaign against drug trafficking as a result of which thousands of its police officers have been killed or injured.

The country accounts for 80 percent of the opium and 90 percent of the morphine intercepted in the world, according to the International Narcotics Control Board.

The campaign, according to officials, costs the country 800 million dollars per yea, IRNA reported.
