TEHRAN -- Khatereh Parvaneh is a name familiar to Iranian art lovers. The former school teacher has engaged in cultural activities since 1957.

The veteran musician Saba encouraged Parvaneh to sing because of her talent in reciting the poems of famous Iranian poets such as Sa'di, Hafez and Molana.

Parvaneh does not sing any poem. She chooses the best poems of renowned Iranian poets. She said, "I had the great opportunity in my life to be trained by great musicians and to perform in remarkable orchestras."

"Vocal talent is both acquired and inherited. There should be a natural talent within a singer, and some of this talent is inherited from their parents. Of course, the role of teachers cannot be ignored," Parvaneh said in an exclusive interview with the TEHRAN TIMES.

She further said, "The voice of a singer should be pleasant. A singer should comprehend the theme and melody of a song. Moreover, a singer should be able to understand poetry."

Parvaneh, whose mother was a famous singer in her time, referred to poetry and mysticism as the two main elements of Iranian music.

Parvaneh, who was prevented from performing her art for about 20 years, reappeared on the stage 3 years ago. She recalled those 20 years as "The years of black silence". "The death of my art and spirit happened during those years. I had a feeling of futility. I couldn't even sing for my children," Parvaneh sadly explained as tears appeared in her eyes.

"Then, after a sudden invitation 3 years ago, I performed live music on stage. Now I am singing just for my own heart," Parvaneh continued.

Explaining her love for Iran she said, "I love Iran. I have never wanted to leave the country. Although I have performed in most European countries and elsewhere, my heart is here. I want to stay here and train the young generation of art lovers."

Parvaneh, who also performed at the 16th Fajr International Music Festival along with the renowned pianist Ofelia Parto, criticized the scheduling of the festival and said, "The worst time, which was 4:00 p.m., was allocated to women's performances.

Moreover, none of the female musicians and performers were honored in the concluding ceremony. Nobody mentioned the name of any woman in this ceremony. Even the director of the women's program was not recognized. This is not good. It seems that no attention is paid to female musicians."

She also expressed concern over the fact that the special music festival for women, named the Jasmin Festival (Gol-e Yas), would not be held this year. The Jasmin Festival was first held three years ago.
