TEHRAN – The voice of resistance resonates from the streets of Gaza to the halls of BRICS summits and Shanghai Cooperation Organization meetings. Palestinian students waving their flag at universities around the world, African leaders expelling colonial forces, Latin American politicians asserting the independence of their decisions, and Islamic resistance movements in West Asia that have shaped the ethical and military pillars of the region—all demonstrate that the world no longer accepts the unipolar order dominated by the U.S. and Europe.

From BRICS to BRICS+: Implications for the Global South
The upcoming 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will, for the first time, host an expanded grouping of 11 members and 10 partner countries, marking a significant milestone in BRICS history. Originally composed of four members – Brazil, Russia, India and China in 2006 – with South Africa joining in 2011, BRICS, from 2024 to 2025, admitted six new members – Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – becoming BRICS+.

Can the Global South create a unified vision for modernization?
As the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference 2025 begins, the world is at the tipping point of profound geopolitical and economic transformations. The growing disparities between Western governments and the inefficacy of governance are now a global core debate; most Global South nations are now focusing on developing interdependent regional cooperation. The shift in dynamics is indicative of the Global South taking an increasingly influential position that works to realize the vision of a group of states that are intent on creating their own path of modernization and development.
