The school’s grade 6 gifted classes recently participated in the Canadian National Mathematics League Contest, finishing first out of 452 schools from across the country.

The optional math test involves more than a million students from grade 4 through high school. The test aims to improve students’ problem solving skills and understanding of mathematical solutions.
Glen Shields math teacher Jodi Avertick says students began preparing for the contest in the fall by practicing tests from previous years and doing their ongoing homework.
“We teach (students) test-taking skills,” Avertick said. “(The students) need to be asking questions and coming up with various ways to get an answer.”
