TEHRAN – The Foreign Ministry has summoned the Swiss ambassador to Tehran, Livia Leu Agosti, in protest over the recent decision by the United States to use a false name for the Persian Gulf.

The U.S. Navy has recently instructed all its units and forces to use the “Arab Gulf” rather than its original and real name, the Persian Gulf.
Iran has no diplomatic relations with the United States and the Swiss embassy protects U.S. interests in Tehran.
In talks with the Swiss envoy, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs expressed Tehran’s strong disapproval of the U.S. move.
He said the historical records show that the name “Persian Gulf” has been used for millennia to identify the body of water between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast said on Tuesday that the U.S. Navy’s use of a false name for the Persian Gulf will put the credibility of the United States and the international community into question.
When some U.S. officials use a false name for the Persian Gulf, despite the numerous historical records that show this is the true name, it really affects Iranians’ feelings, but it affects the credibility of the United States and the international community more, Mehmanparast stated.
