MADRID (AP) — Fernando Hierro will leave his role as sporting director of World Cup holder Spain when his contract expires on June 30.

The former Real Madrid defender has been in the position since 2007 and has presided over the country's greatest run of results, including a second European Championship title in 2008 and last year's World Cup triumph.
Spanish reports said the federation balked at Hierro's increased salary demands.
