‘Walls of kindness’ gaining strength across Iran

TEHRAN — Most recently with the beginning of the cold season, a growing movement aiming to help poor people is gaining strength nationwide, “the wall of kindness”.

People all over the country joined hands in leading a campaign to hang their warm clothes on painted walls for those who can’t afford to buy warm garments.

The walls are painted in bright colors with hangers and hooks installed on them. Additionally a sentence literally meaning “take it if you need, leave it if you don’t” is written on them.

The charity concept was originated in Fars Province. The woman whose house wall is painted as the first wall of kindness in Shiraz, the capital of Fars, tells Mehr news agency that one day a group of young boys and girls knocked on her door asking for her permission to paint her house wall and hook some hangers on it.

“People welcomed the idea instantly,” the woman whose name is not mentioned by the agency noted. “It is interesting to note that people leave more than one set of clothes on the wall and those who need only take one.”

Although the true identity of the originator of the concept still remained unknown, the idea proved to be successful and soon spread to other cities in Iran.

As usual social network has served an active role in letting the notion go viral. So far people have set up walls of kindness in provinces such as Khorasan, Isfahan, Markazi, Hamedan, Kermanshah, Mazandaran, Semnan, and Tehran.

From north to south the Iranian are nurturing their love urging everyone to take part in the campaign with the motto of “not letting any (homeless people) shiver in the cold this winter.”

This is not the first and last charity movement in Iran. Not very long ago a similar idea also started in streets of Iran, where fridges are left outside houses and encourage people to leave food there for the homeless.

This social movement which is originated and being led by ordinary people and not any governmental organizations, is the conclusive evidence of the fact that people are capable of making great changes in the world which can turn it into a better place to live for everyone.
