Iran’s gold medal count at Asiad rises to seven

TEHRAN – Iran snatched three gold medals in Greco-Roman and taekwondo events on Wednesday at the 2018 Asian Games, bringing the nation’s total gold medal count to seven.

Wrestlers Mohammadali Geraei and Hossein Nouri won two gold medals.

Geraei claimed a gold medal in the 77kg weight category, beating Akzhol Makhmudov from Kyrgyzstan 7-3 in the final bout.

Furthermore, Nouri won the gold after defeating Uzbekistan’s Rustam Assakalov 6-1 in the 87kg final.

Taekwondo practitioner Mirhashem Hosseini won a gold medal in the 63kg after defeating Chinese Zhao Shuai 17-11 in the final.

On Tuesday, Saeid Rajabi had claimed Iran’s taekwondo first gold medal in the Games on Tuesday.

Freestyle wrestlers Hassan Yazdani (86kg), Alireza Karimi (97kg) and Parviz Hadi (125kg) had also snatched three gold medals.

The 18th Asian Games stage 465 events out of 40 sports, among which 330 events from 32 sports will feature in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Games, attracting more than 10,000 athletes, will run through Sept. 2.
