Danish Transporters Fuelled by French Protests

COPENHAGEN Transporters in the Danish capital Copenhagen on Friday summoned their colleagues to a national meeting to discuss possible protest action similar to that in France in the wake of soaring fuel prices, AFP said.
"We shall be discussing the demand we put to the government to reduce taxes (on diesel)," the meeting's organizer Annette Joergensen said in a statement.
"But it is only a matter of time before something gives," she added.
The meeting is scheduled to take place on Sunday at Hillerod, north of Copenhagen.
Joergensen said she hoped that the announcement of a national meeting would "stop hauliers from taking spontaneous and unauthorized action." She said they would discuss demands for a 72 oeres (9 eurocents) (7.8 us cents) tax cut on a liter of diesel fuel.
According to the letter inviting truckers to the meeting, hauliers will be asked about taking action similar to that adopted by their French counterparts.
"In France it appears that this is the best way of being heard, so why should we not do the same thing in Denmark?" the document asks.
