TEHRAN – Situated just 15 kilometers from the city of Hamadan near a road to Malayer, Abshineh wetland, stands as a testament to Iran's rich environmental heritage.

Spanning an impressive 85 hectares, the site can be reached downstream from a dam of the same name which is fed by the Abshineh river. Also known as the Yalfan, the river originates near the village of Yalfan, nourishing the region with its life-giving waters.

The creation of the Abshineh dam along this river's path has birthed a beautiful wetland, which now serves as a crucial stopover and resting ground for migratory birds. Among the winged visitors are storks, pelicans, and common shelducks, with others like flamingos, great egrets, terns, and herons making appearances during migration seasons.

Each spring, the wetland teems with birds, offering a unique respite on their journey, while autumn heralds the approach of winter with new flocks arriving.

Thanks to its flat valley location at the base of Mount Alvand, the Abshineh wetland boasts lush vegetation including sunflowers, mint, umbrella plants, evening primrose, and borage. Such rich plant life not only provides a perfect habitat for wildlife but also enhances the wetland's biodiversity.

For those planning to explore this natural wonder, the wetland offers limited but sufficient facilities due to its proximity to Hamadan's city center.

The nearby village of Abshineh, also known as Yalfan, is also worth a visit. Known for its lush fruit orchards and tall ash forests, the village offers stunning natural landscapes, especially in spring and summer, when it becomes a popular local retreat.

Since being designated a no-hunting zone in 2011 due to its ecological importance, Abshineh wetland has become an exemplary habitat for both aquatic and shorebirds, protected and managed through conservation efforts. Whether you are a bird watcher, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful escape, Abshineh Wetland presents a spectacular slice of Iran's natural beauty.

During the summer, make sure to taste the village's famed apricots, while autumn brings a breathtaking display of migratory birds amidst the changing leaves, amplifying the beauty of the season.
