Devastation grips eastern Afghanistan after powerful quake

September 1, 2025 - 15:23

A magnitude-6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan just before midnight on Sunday, killing at least 800 people and injuring more than 2,800, according to officials. The toll is expected to rise as rescuers reach cut-off mountain communities and isolated villages.

The shallow tremor, centered near Jalalabad in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, flattened fragile mud-brick homes and triggered landslides that severed roads and communications across rugged terrain. Helicopters and ground crews are racing to pull survivors from rubble amid widespread destruction and growing desperation.

Afghanistan’s already strained humanitarian capacity is under severe pressure, with dwindling international aid hampering urgent emergency response efforts.
