LONDON Former Arsenal winger George Armstrong, who played in the English club's 1970-71 league and cup double winning side, has died aged 56.
Arsenal said that Armstrong, reserve team coach with the Premier League club for the past decade, died in hospital on Tuesday night after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
"He was an inspiring coach as well as a superb player in his day," the club said.
"More importantly, George was an effervescent, honest, down to earth soul, widely respected by everyone at the club." Armstrong joined Arsenal in 1961 and made a record 621 club appearances, with 68 goals, before leaving for Leicester City in 1977. His record has subsequently been overtaken by David O'Leary's 722 appearances and Tony Adams's current 624.
Armstrong played in the Arsenal side which won the 1970 Inter Cities Fairs' Cup, later replaced by the UEFA Cup, and was voted the club's player of the year in 1970.
