Parliament Again Adjourned Over PM's Resignation
December 12, 2000 - 0:0
NEW DELHI -- Both the houses of Indian Parliament remained paralyzed again Monday, with opposition insisting on the resignation of the prime minister for his remarks on temple building at the site of Babri Masjid.
The opposition, especially the Congress and the Left Front wanted to have discussions on the charges framed by a trial court against three ministers indicted in the masjid demolition case under rule 184, which entails voting.
Even before the Lower House assembled, Samajwadi Party led by Ulayam Singh Yadav, former defense minister of India surrounded the speaker's podium and kept on shouting slogans "Law-Breaking Govt Will Not Run", "A Govt. Responsible for Demolition of Babri Masjid Will Not Run".
Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee, Union Home Minister L.K. Advani and the HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi were not present in the house, while Uma Bharti, the sports minister, charged in the Babri Masjid demolition was occupying one of the back benches.
Meanwhile, an all-party meeting convened by Speaker G.M.C. Balayogi to resolve the impasse over the Babri issue ended in a stalemate Monday with the Congress sticking to its demand for discussion under rule 184, as voting on the floor of the house under this rule will expose the BJP allies in the government and even may result in toppling of the "applecart".
