PARIS -- More than two out of 1,000 cows considered "at risk" are infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), or "mad cow disease", according to preliminary test results issued in Paris on Monday.
The analysis of 15,000 examinations performed on cows with the Swiss-made prionics test revealed that 2.1 of 1,000 animals had BSE. There are 21 million cows in France.
The French government intends to examine a total of 48,000 animals under the prionics test program, which was begun in June.
