BUCHAREST -- Romania plans to boost defense spending by a third this year to upgrade its armed forces in a bid to join NATO next year, Prime Minister Adrian Nastase said, Reuters said. Nastase told reporters late on Monday that he wanted to win cross-party support for his drive to join the Western alliance, which rejected Romania in 1997 while accepting three former Warsaw Pact allies who had made more progress with military reforms.
