TEHRAN -- Iranian Foreign Minister Manuchehr Mottaki in a meeting with UNHCR High Commissioner Antonio Guterres here Thursday said that the Western countries are trying to spread extremism in regional countries.
Pointing to NATO’s failure in Afghanistan, Mottaki slammed the West for promoting extremism in this country and said extremism resembles a “bomb that its explosion in one part of the world is a prelude to explosions in the other parts” of the world. He pointed to Iran’s cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in hosting millions of refugees over the past thirty years, saying humanitarian actions are not taken unless there is a “strong humane motivation”.
Mottaki criticized the West’s approach toward humanitarian crises, saying Iran is aware of the fact that the West “politicizes” everything including humanitarian issues.
He ridiculed accusations that Iran cooperates with insurgents in Afghanistan.
Some Western countries meet with extremist groups in Musa Qala in Afghanistan and some European capitals but they spread rumors that Iran is cooperating with extremist groups, Mottaki said.
He added that Western countries seek to form “innocuous extremist groups” which they think would be of a great help to their colonialism-oriented policy.
Mottaki reiterated that everybody knows that NATO has got nowhere in Afghanistan and the era of unilateralism and bullying acts is over.
Referring to international problems, he said 60 years after the creation of the United Nation there is a need to revise the UN structure.
Guterres, for his part, thanked Iran for its cooperation with the UNHCR and said the third registration of Afghani refugees in Iran shows Iran’s large capacity that deserves high praise.
He criticized international community for not helping Iran to lessen the refugee burden, adding that UNHCR is ready to increase cooperation with Iran
