Artist says sculpture underdeveloped in Iran

TEHRAN – Iranian sculptor Qodratollah Aqeli here Sunday complained that sculpture has not improved in terms of quality in Iran.
“Sculpture is poor in Iran,” reiterated the artist in his talks with the MNA, adding, “However, Tehran Municipality’s Urban Beautification Organization and some other state-run centers have taken major steps to boost the art form.
“The fact is that sculpture just like cinema needs enough budget to flourish.”
He maintained that the art should be displayed and observed among people not only in the exhibitions.
Aqeli exemplified the historical city of Isfahan, where a host of sculptures in squares and streets represent the art very well.
“My works are mostly inspired by Islamic and Shiite art.”
