Uruguay’s Anti-Imperialist Committee condemns US military buildup near Venezuela

The Uruguayan Anti-Imperialist Committee for Solidarity with Cuba and the Peoples of the World has condemned the deployment of more than 4,500 U.S. Marines in the Caribbean, accompanied by the missile cruiser USS Lake Erie, the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Newport News, and other warships reportedly moving toward Venezuelan waters.

According to teleSUR, the coalition issued a statement accusing the Trump administration of acting “outside the provisions of international law” and posing “a serious threat to peace, security, and regional stability.”

The group welcomed Colombia’s call, as CELAC’s pro tempore president, for a meeting of foreign ministers to address the crisis. It also reminded Washington of its obligations under the 1967 Treaty of Tlatelolco, which prohibits nuclear weapons in the region.

Framing the buildup as the latest in a series of hostile measures — from sanctions to blockades — the statement expressed unwavering solidarity with Venezuela and urged Latin American unity against “imperialist aggression.”

The statement comes as Venezuela faces what President Nicolás Maduro calls the gravest foreign threat in a century — a massive U.S. naval buildup off its coast under the guise of anti-drug operations.

The force, including warships, a submarine, over 4,500 troops, and F-35 jets, arrived as a U.S. strike killed 11 people at sea, an act Caracas condemns as a blatant violation of sovereignty.
