TEHRAN – At least 420 people lost their lives in road accidents during the first twelve days of the Iranian New Year which began on March 21st, according to reports and statements issued by the Police and medical emergency services.

Exceeding the speed limit and not fastening the back seat belt were the main factors which account for a majority of traffic fatalities, police reports said.
Police statistics also showed that 827 road accidents were recorded during the first 5 days of the Iranian calendar year and over 23,000 vehicles were impounded in the same period.
In Iran road accidents are estimated to claim the lives of over 25,000 people each year. Every year as the Iranian people celebrate the renewal of spring, there is a large increase in the number of holiday trips and that is when the casualty toll on the roads mount
