Iran takes seat in Universal Postal Union’s Council of Administration

TEHRAN — Iran managed to secure a seat in the Universal Postal Union’s (UPU) Council of Administration over the 26th UPU Congress which was held in Istanbul during September 20-October 7, 2016.

The three-week event, set the course of the UPU’s work over the next four years, brought together high-level dignitaries and delegates from the UPU’s 192 member countries, IRIB reported.

Established in 1874, UPU, with its headquarters in the Swiss capital Berne, is the second oldest international organization worldwide.

With its 192 member countries, the UPU is the primary forum for cooperation between postal sector players. It helps to ensure a truly universal network of up-to-date products and services.

In this way, the organization fulfils an advisory, mediating and liaison role, and provides technical assistance where needed. It sets the rules for international mail exchanges and makes recommendations to stimulate growth in mail, parcel and financial services volumes and improve quality of service for customers.

The Post Company of Iran CEO Hossein Mehri noted that Iran’s active role in the congress and the participation of Communications and Information Technology Minister Mahmoud Vaezi in the event played a key role in Iran’s selection.
