Iran U23 football team must change strategy in Asia
TEHRAN – Iran earned their second successive draw at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup and now must focus on defeating Lebanon in their upcoming match.
The Persians started the campaign with a hard-fought draw against Korea Republic and also were held to a goalless draw against Uzbekistan.
Omid Ravankhah’s side are scheduled to meet Lebanon on Tuesday. Lebanon have been previously knocked out of the competition, suffering two losses against Uzbekistan and Korea Republic.
Iran must defeat Lebanon on Tuesday to ensure their qualification, because Uzbekistan and Korea Republic sit first and second in Group C with four points. Iran need to beat Lebanon with at least two goals because Korea and Uzbekistan will earn five points with a draw and goal difference will determine which team will qualify for the next stage.
Iran U23 football team could have defeated Uzbekistan on Saturday but their strikers failed to capitalize on their chances.
Now, they must defeat Lebanon, however they will have a chance to advance to the next stage if Korea or Uzbekistan emerge victorious in another Group C match.
